June 2014 Endorsements

San Jose City Council candidate for District 1: Susan Gonsalves Marsland

Susan said it best in a recent newsletter,

"All too often, good candidates — particularly women — are discouraged from running for office .... Worse yet, they're told . . . they can't win. When I started on this journey more than a year ago, I knew it wouldn't be easy."

We are proud to support longtime District 1 resident, Susan Marsland, where she is a mother of four boys, a teacher in the Moreland School District, and has engaged with the community for the past 21 years.  We believe that Susan can bring a diverse group of voices from the constituents in that city council district because it has been her home.  She is knowledgeable about local government and thoughtful when making decisions. The only woman in the race, she has been discounted by special interests and is running a truly grassroots campaign. She has been fiscally savvy with her campaign money and twice as effective getting her message out there. We believe these skills should not be overlooked and, in fact, heralded. Please consider getting involved with the Marsland campaign!

San Jose City Council candidate for District 3: Kathy Yamada Sutherland

Kathy Sutherland has earned our endorsement - not just because she's a woman - but because she is the most qualified of the pool of candidates.  Kathy has extensive experience working with City Hall, a deep connection to the community and passion for progressive change. Even her opponents see her as a qualified and formidable opponent.

District 3 residents would benefit from a council member like Kathy.   A proven leader, Kathy Sutherland has a track record of success both as a strong neighborhood advocate and as a staff member working inside City Hall. As a former Chief of Staff, Co-Chair of the Diridon/Arena Strategic Plan, member of the Citizens Advisory Committee for the Open Space Authority, and a member of the Healthy Neighborhoods Venture Fund, her credentials are unmatched.  Kathy’s passion for improving neighborhoods and engaging community members in important decisions is why she is running for city council.

Working in local government has a steep learning curve. Kathy has the tools, resources, and experience to hit the ground running if elected to City Council. Out of all the candidates in this race, she is by far above and beyond qualified. Please consider getting out the vote with her today.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office: Sheriff Laurie Smith (incumbent)

Sheriff Laurie Smith was wholeheartedly endorsed by the membership several months ago.  As California's first female sheriff, Laurie broke up one of valley's the oldest boys' clubs and professionalized an organization that had been not long before managed by a cowboy boot-wearing, "aw shucks"–type of sheriff of the type seen in Coen Brothers movies (minus the gravitas). Budget overruns and mismanagement prompted county supervisors to remove the jails from the sheriff's control and then appoint a replacement who was more of an administrator than a leader. The sheriff's office today is fiscally sound, accessible and outfitted with new technology. Although she faces heated competition in the upcoming election, Smith has already served three terms and shut plenty of mouths. We believe that Sheriff Laurie Smith is the best choice because she also has a proven track record and is an inspiration to us all on the poise of being an elected official - female or not. Please join us in supporting our sheriff and get her re-elected!
